Most beginners do well on a stable drop-through or cruiser around 38–42 inches with softer wheels (78–80a) for forgiving rides on real pavement. Match the deck to your height and riding style, and start on quiet, flat surfaces with full safety gear.
At minimum: a properly fitted helmet, wrist guards, knee pads, elbow pads, and closed-toe shoes. Safety gear is widely recommended for skateboarding and longboarding — especially while you are learning or riding faster.
No. Downhill riding is an advanced discipline that requires controlled locations, full protective gear, and proper instruction. Build pushing, foot braking, carving, and stopping skills first.
Bigger and softer (65–75mm, 78–82a) is more forgiving on rough pavement and great for cruising. Smaller and harder is faster for slides and freeride. Use the calculator on this page for a tailored suggestion.
